PARA POWERLIFTING - SPORT EXPLAINER PRESENTED BY ALLIANZ

Powerlifting paralympics 2024

Para powerlifting is a bench press competition focused on testing upper body strength. While it only features one discipline, athletes compete across various weight categories.

Powerlifting evolved from weightlifting, which made its Paralympic debut at the Tokyo 1964 Games. However, powerlifting was officially introduced as a Paralympic sport in 1984, with women’s competitions added later at the Sydney 2000 Games.

Rules Overview:
Each lifter selects the weight they wish to attempt. With help from a coach, they lift the bar off the rack and, following the referee's signal, lower it to their chest, pause, and press it upward until their arms are fully extended with elbows locked. A successful lift is confirmed by three judges after the referee signals the completion of the attempt. Athletes get three attempts, and the heaviest successful lift determines the winner.

There are 20 events in total, with 10 weight categories for men and 10 for women. There is no classification system based on disability.
